Discovering Bliss Within: The Magic of Meditation

Imagine your life as a to-do list.

Some of the items on the list are mundane and require little thought – brushing your teeth, taking your vitamins, drinking water, folding laundry, unloading the dishwasher, making your bed, vacuuming, drying your hair, and walking the dog.

Some items require a little more thought – driving to work, grocery shopping, getting dressed for work, cooking, taking kids to soccer practice, exercising.

Some require even more effort – earning money, taking care of a sick family member, helping the kids with their homework, cleaning out the garage, paying bills, and decluttering your closet.

Then there are things that you do less often but perhaps with more effort – looking for a new home, planning for a move, dealing with a crisis, although this latter one may be a daily occurrence for some of us.

And then there are the catch-ups. Things that have been on your to-do list for days, weeks, months, or even years but you have never gotten to doing them. Perhaps the majority of things on your to-do list are catch-ups?

How many items does your list contain? Dozens, hundreds, thousands? How many things have you forgotten to put on your list?  Dozens, hundreds, thousands?

Now imagine the to-do lists that belong to your kids, spouse, parents, and friends. For how many items on their lists are you responsible? Dozens, hundreds, thousands?

But wait, wait, there’s more! Those of us who are empaths (people who experience the emotions of others as if they were our own) also subconsciously carry the items on the lists belonging to our neighbors, co-workers, random strangers at the grocery store, and so on.

Somewhere, buried deep within all those items on the to-do lists is YOU. Gasping for breath, barely surviving the chaos, often unaware of your own wants, needs, dreams, and desires.

What if, suddenly, every to-do list disappeared, dissolved, dissipated, disintegrated… leaving behind… just the YOU. Naked, shivering, blinded by the light, but nonetheless – it is YOU.

This is exactly what happens during meditation. The noise quiets, the worry takes a back seat, and every to-do list moves into the back of your conscience. Now you are able to find the space between the forms, the opening between the thoughts, the pause between the movements.

And the best part is that you get to choose what to do or not do with that newfound emptiness.

You can do nothing and just enjoy the freedom of the vacuum. Sit with the newfound lightness. Breathe in the respite. There’s much to be gained from just experiencing the nothingness.

Or you can connect with the YOU that often vanishes within the daily noise.
Talk to the YOU, find out what she wants, what she feels, what she dreams. Hear the passion in her voice, feel her desires, see what makes her happy, and give her the power to learn, heal, and grow.

Each time you meditate, each time you quiet the noise, that true, wonderful, all-knowing YOU grows stronger and stronger.

Then, one day, you wake up to discover that your life is no longer driven by the to-do list.

Now the voice of YOU is the strongest, the wisest, and the most powerful one in your head. Now you know your own hopes, dreams, and desires. Now you see that path that is meant to be your life.

This, and so much more is the beauty, the power, the splendor, and the gift of meditation.
